Lincoln, Neb. (Oct. 17, 2024) —The spotlight shone brightly at the recent 68th Annual Conference of the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers (AGLOW) as two remarkable individuals were honored for their unwavering commitment to conservation. Steve and Sue Skold, a dynamic duo with deep roots in outdoor advocacy, received the coveted Individual Golden Glow Award for their work with the Iowa Chapter of Safari Club International (SCI.) This accolade celebrates those whose tireless efforts make a significant impact on nature, presentation, and community engagement.
“Thanks to Steve and Sue, this chapter has not only thrived but has also become an influential force in the community. Their tireless dedication is evident in every initiative they’ve spearheaded,” said Kevin Paulson, AGLOW Executive Director
In 1977, a pivotal moment changed Steve Skold’s life forever. As a high school student, he received a scholarship from the Minnesota Chapter of SCI to attend the American Wildness Leadership School in Wyoming. That experience opened his eyes to conservation and advocacy. By 1988, he had met Sue, who shared his passion for SCI. Relocating to Iowa created an opportunity: they could establish an SCI chapter closer to home.
In 1992, that dream became reality with their inaugural gathering. Sixteen passionate individuals attended – two of which were AGLOW Board members. Steve took on the role of President and dedicated six years of service that saw attendance grow exponentially.
As the Iowa Chapter of SCI flourished, it launched a variety of impactful programs. One standout initiative was the annual buffalo giveaway. Each year, a dedicated member would journey to a western state for this unique hunting experience. The hunter kept the trophy but graciously donated the meat to the chapter. This generous acct provided ground meat that was distributed to homeless shelters across Central Iowa just before Thanksgiving. By 2023, they celebrated an astonishing milestone – providing 90,000 meals to the needy.
Together Steve and Sue championed many other innovative projects including the sensory safari trailer, filled with furs and trophies, that is designed for education outreach throughout Iowa. Today the Iowa chapter stands as a beacon for hunting and conservation efforts. Its transformation over the years is nothing short of remarkable.
“This couple embodies what it means to be advocates for nature. Their vision continues to inspire many, ensuring that future generations appreciate the beauty of hunting and conservation just as they do. Such unwavering commitment makes them truly deserving of recognition with the AGLOW Golden Glow Individual Award and that is why I nominated them,” said Larry Larsen.
